Stainless Steel Garden Edge | Stainless Steel Lawn Edging | Stainless Steel Path Edging

Garden edging in six materials, and the tools to lay it

Whether you want the bright line of stainless, the settled rust of coreten, a plain black steel edge or the cheapest plastic that will hold a border, the range covers the job and the tools that go with it.

Durability

Steel edging holds a line for years where plastic bends and lifts and timber rots. Stainless resists rust outright; coreten forms a stable patina that protects the steel underneath it.

Six materials, one job

Stainless, coreten, black steel, corrugated iron, recycled rubber and plastic. The line you want and the budget you have are usually what decides it, not the garden.

Buy by the metre

The steel and plastic edging is sold by the metre and the border edging by the 24 cm section, so you order the run you need. There is no minimum order.

No dig, hammer in

The steel edging drives in on its own spikes and bends to a curve as you go, so there is no trench to dig. Wear gloves: the ends are sharp. It comes up again if the bed changes.

The tools as well

Half moon spades, a hand edger, a dead blow hammer for the spikes, a thatching rake, leather gloves and a kneeling pad. The things you reach for on the day the edging arrives.

Buying guide

Choosing garden edging

We sell garden edging and the tools that go with it, so this is the short version of what we have learned: which material suits which job, how much to order, and what to have in your hand on the day it arrives.

Stainless steel

The brightest line of the six, and the one that stays bright. Stainless resists rust and corrosion outright, so it does not stain the paving beside it and it does not need a finish. Sold by the metre in three face heights: 50 mm for a lawn edge, 100 mm for a bed, 200 mm where the edge has to hold back a built-up bed or a gravel path.

Coreten steel

Weathering steel, which forms a stable rust-like patina that protects the steel underneath rather than eating it. Ours arrives pre-rusted, so the bed looks finished the day it goes in. Two face heights, 100 mm and 150 mm. One thing to plan for: while a patina settles, rain carries iron oxide off the surface and it marks pale paving, so keep a new run on soil or gravel rather than against white concrete.

Black steel, iron and rubber

Black metal edging gives a plain dark line that disappears into a bed and lets the planting do the work. Corrugated iron edging has a profile to it and reads as rustic rather than modern. Recycled rubber mulch border comes as a roll, is the fastest of the lot to lay, and is the one to pick where children play.

Plastic

The cheapest way to hold a border. Plastic garden edging is sold by the metre in 5 cm and 10 cm face heights; plastic border edging comes in 24 cm sections. It will not hold a heavy edge the way steel does, but for a mulch line or a small bed it does the job for a few dollars a metre.

How much to order

Measure the run and round up, because a cut end is a wasted end. There is no minimum order. Steel edging needs anchoring: our steel spikes come in 50 and 100 packs and the plastic spikes in 10, 50 and 100, and a dead blow hammer drives them without deforming the edge.

The tools

A half moon spade cuts the trench line before the edging goes in and is the tool that makes an edge look professional. A hand edger keeps that line through the season. A thatching rake is for the lawn either side of it. Leather gloves are not optional on steel edging, and a kneeling pad is the difference between an afternoon and a sore afternoon.

Questions before you order

If you are not sure which face height suits a bed, how many metres a curved run takes, or which spikes go with which edging, ask before you buy. It is a short email and a great deal easier than sending steel back. You can reach us at theteam@steeledging.au.
